Supporting ADHD in Schools Means Understanding Digital Ecosystems

Why supporting executive functioning is about more than finding the right app.

There is no shortage of digital tools promising to support students with ADHD.

Search online for apps to improve organisation, focus, time management or productivity and you'll find hundreds of recommendations. Many are well designed and genuinely helpful. They can reduce the executive functioning demands that make planning, prioritising and remembering everyday tasks so difficult for many neurodivergent students.

As an ADHD coach, I regularly recommend digital tools to students and families. Recently, however, I found myself involved in a very different conversation.

Working alongside my school's Digital Learning and Information Technology teams, we were exploring how technology could better support students with executive functioning challenges. As we discussed different possibilities, I realised something I had never fully appreciated before.

Supporting students with ADHD is not simply about choosing the best app. It is about understanding the entire digital ecosystem in which that app needs to function.

From an ADHD perspective, the solution often seems straightforward. If a tool helps a student organise their work, remember deadlines or manage their attention more effectively, why wouldn't every school encourage its use?

Schools, however, operate within a much more complex environment.

Every digital tool brings questions about privacy, cybersecurity, data protection, accessibility, licensing, technical support, staff training, integration with existing systems and long-term sustainability. Decisions that appear simple for an individual student become considerably more complex when they must work safely and consistently across an entire school community.

Rather than seeing these perspectives as competing priorities, I began to see them as different parts of the same conversation.

Everyone wanted the same outcome: helping students succeed.

They were simply approaching the problem from different professional lenses. This experience also prompted me to rethink how we support executive functioning. Perhaps our first instinct should not always be to introduce another app. Perhaps we should first ask whether students are making full use of the digital tools they already have.

Many schools around the world have invested heavily in platforms such as Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Within these ecosystems are calendars, task lists, digital notebooks, reminders, collaborative documents, accessibility features and increasingly sophisticated AI-powered supports. Yet many students only use a small fraction of what these platforms can do.

For students with ADHD, there is another important consideration.

Every additional platform introduces another login, another password, another notification system and another interface to learn. While each tool may have been designed to reduce cognitive load, together they can unintentionally increase it.

Executive functioning is not simply about becoming more organised. It is about reducing the number of decisions the brain needs to make. A student who manages one well-integrated system consistently may ultimately be better supported than a student attempting to juggle five different apps that rarely communicate with one another.

Research consistently reminds us that executive functions underpin planning, organisation, working memory, self-monitoring and goal-directed behaviour (Diamond, 2013). Supporting these skills therefore involves more than providing additional tools. It requires designing environments that minimise unnecessary cognitive demands so that students can devote their mental energy to learning itself.

This is why I believe schools are beginning to shift from thinking about individual technologies towards thinking about digital ecosystems.

The question is no longer, Which app should we recommend?

A more useful question may be:

How can we create a coherent digital environment that supports learning, protects students, and reduces cognitive load?

That conversation requires educators, school leaders, digital learning specialists, IT professionals and those working in neurodiversity to collaborate rather than work in isolation.

Each brings expertise that the others do not. When those perspectives come together, technology becomes more than a collection of software. It becomes part of a thoughtfully designed learning environment.

Supporting students with ADHD has never been simply about providing more tools.

It is about building better systems.

And perhaps that is where some of our greatest opportunities now lie.
